Cover story: CSX leader Steve Angel aims to take the Class I in a new direction
Several years ago, In September 2025, CSX's board appointed Steve Angel as president and CEO. He succeeded Joe Hinrichs, who resigned shortly beforehand.
Angel had been retired since 2022, when he stepped down as CEO of Linde plc. He previously served General Electric for 22 years and was involved in doing business with railroads there, so CSX's top post was attractive — enough to pull him out of retirement.
While at the reins over the past nine months, Angel has sought to take CSX in a different direction, one aimed at making the Class I a better operational and financial performer.
So, how has that strategy gone so far for Angel? What has come up short? Where has he found success? What are the next near-term steps?
