May Preview of Progressive Railroading

Cover Story: Status, reaction update on mammoth UP-NS merger plan

It’s been more than nine months since Union Pacific Railroad announced plans to acquire Norfolk Southern Railway through an $85 billion transaction. The two Class Is since have worked to promote their plan to merge and create the first transcontinental railroad in the United States.

UP and NS hit a road bump in January when the Surface Transportation Board (STB) rejected their merger application as incomplete. They now expect to submit a revised application to the board by April 30.

In the meantime, the two Class Is continue to face opposition to their merger plan while questions/concerns about certain aspects of the combination keep arising.

How are UP and NS addressing the naysayers and skeptics? Are there different approaches now to promoting the merger? What will be the next big step if the STB accepts the revised application? Has the overall projected timeline for the transaction changed?

For answers to those questions and more, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl checks in with the two primary architects of the merger: UP CEO Jim Vena and NS President and CEO Mark George. Several rail industry analysts and opposers will share their viewpoints, as well.
