Progressive Railroading August 2025 Preview

Cover story: NS pins high hopes on ‘PSR 2.0’ transformation

Several years ago, Norfolk Southern Railway became one of the Class I adopters of precision scheduled railroading (PSR). The operational strategy helped NS improve service performance, but not to the degree the railroad’s top brass had been expecting.

Enter PSR 2.0, an evolution of the traditional PSR model that NS now is embracing to better enhance operational efficiency and improve customer satisfaction. PSR 2.0 focuses on balancing cost control with service improvements to foster a more reliable and customer-centric rail network.

NS leaders are counting on PSR 2.0 to take the railroad to the next level as a service provider and financial performer. To learn more about the revised operational strategy and gauge the railroad’s progress with implementing it, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl talks all-things PSR 2.0 with NS CEO Mark George, COO John Orr, CMO Ed Elkins and CIO Anil Bhatt.
