June 2025 Editorial

Cover Story: The state of the North American intermodal market

Intermodal traffic was strong in the first quarter. Total volume rose 6.3%, driven by an 8.5% climb in international intermodal traffic and 5.6% gain in domestic container movements, according to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA).

What's behind the quarterly traffic increase? How is volume trending for the remainder of 2025? And what factors are considered favorable or unfavorable to continued traffic growth?

Associate Editor Bridget Dean seeks answers to those questions and more from an IANA executive. She'll also check in with execs at several Class Is to learn how their plans are progressing with improving an intermodal service or building a new intermodal facility.
