Cover story: NS posts progress with growth goals
Since late 2022, Norfolk Southern Railway has strived to follow a new path paved by its President and CEO Alan Shaw that in part calls for seeking ways to more sustainably grow, to more ardently attract and satisfy customers, and to strike and maintain the right balance between service, productivity and growth.

The Class I has made some progress along that route, especially when it comes to landing new business and posting growth. NS has launched several new initiatives, ramped up efforts to solidify relationships with customers and business partners — including short lines — and strived harder to get the word out about the Class I’s advantages to prompt growth.

For example, the railroad recently spent more than $200 million to boost capacity on the 3B Corridor, its key line in Alabama that connects markets to the Port of Mobile; acquired a transload and warehouse facility in Chicago to convert flexible freight to rail; and created a Short Line Performance Project designed to improve communication and information sharing with small railroads to boost interchange performance and attract new customers.

There are a lot of moving parts with the build-more-business push, and Managing Editor Jeff Stagl will aim to describe them and tie them together after interviewing several of NS’ high-ranking marketing executives.
