Cover story: The hydrogen locomotive machinations at CPKC
In December 2020, Canadian Pacific announced plans to develop North America’s first line-haul hydrogen locomotive by retrofitting a diesel locomotive with hydrogen fuel cells and batteries.
A prototype designed and built by CP engineers marked its first movement in late 2021 and first revenue-service moves in late 2022. The hydrogen locomotive project continued after CP and Kansas City Southern merged in April 2023 to form Canadian Pacific Kansas City.
Since the merger, CPKC has deployed a second hydrogen locomotive and fabricated its first high-horsepower hydrogen locomotive, which is undergoing tests.
So, how are those tests going? Where do things stand with the hydrogen locomotive project? What does CPKC expect to accomplish with the project during the rest of 2024 and in 2025?
For answers, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl checks in with Kyle Mulligan, CPKC’s assistant vice president of operations technology, who helps manage the hydrogen locomotive project.
