Cover Story: CSX’s foray into hydrogen-powered locomotives

In mid-April, CSX unveiled its first hydrogen-powered locomotive that was developed through a partnership with Canadian Pacific Kansas City. The locomotive was converted from an existing diesel unit using a hydrogen conversion kit developed by CPKC.

In summer 2023, the two Class Is decided to collaborate on developing hydrogen-powered locomotives. The newfangled motive power plays into CSX’s commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. In addition, converting an existing unit into a next-generation locomotive further extends its useful life.

With the first unit just arriving on the scene at CSX, there is a lot more to come from the Class I’s hydrogen-powered locomotive initiative with CPKC.

To unravel the coming expectations and past development efforts associated with the initiative, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl checks in with several CSX executives, including Director of Innovation-Alternative Fuels and Energy Management Corey Davis.
