Cover story: Genesee & Wyoming at 125 — and beyond

In late March, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) will mark quite the milestone: its 125th anniversary.

For much of its first century in operation, G&W was a 14-mile railroad serving one customer in upstate New York. The company since has grown exponentially to become North America's largest short-line holding company.

Owned by Brookfield Infrastructure Partners LP and GIC, G&W now controls more than 100 regionals and short lines in North America and Europe, including the United Kingdom. The company employs 7,300, serves 3,000 customers and operates more than 13,000 of track in 43 states, five Canadian provinces and other areas. Its subsidiaries and joint ventures also provide rail service at more than 30 major ports, operate a rail ferry between the U.S. Southeast and Mexico, and offer transload, rail-car switching and car repair services.

G&W leaders aim to accomplish something else: more growth. How will the short-line industry behemoth grow? Where can the leaders take the company over the next five, 10 — or 125 — years?

For answers, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl checks in with G&W's top leader, Michael Miller, the CEO of G&W North America.
