August 2023 Editorial Lineup

Cover story: How Hinrichs is instilling change, driving growth at CSX

In the eight-plus months that Joe Hinrichs has led CSX since becoming president and CEO on Sept. 26, 2022, he has tried to mend a lot of fences.

He talks often about how he inherited a Class I with frayed relationships among many shippers, employees, regulators, politicians and other stakeholders due to CSX's implementation of precision scheduled railroading, the pandemic, contentious labor negotiations and service performance slips.

He's met with many customers to discuss their needs and CSX's shortcomings, conducted more than three dozen unannounced site visits in the railroad's network and issued a survey to better understand employees' concerns and expectations, and driven a number of changes. Hinrichs also instituted One CSX, which mimics a One Ford initiative he crafted at his former employer that calls for acting as one team to execute one plan to achieve one common goal. Its objective: To bring together and rally CSX's nearly 22,000 employees so the railroad can function as a more well-oiled machine for its customers.

To learn what his short- and long-term plans are in that regard, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl holds a long and frank discussion with CSX's think-differently, act-differently leader.
