Say congrats to the new CPKC as the two major railroads form an all new Class I, and see what else is slated for the June issue of Progressive Railroading.

June 2023 Editorial Lineup

Cover story: The integral parts of the CPKC integration

The hard part is over for Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern. On April 14, they officially merged to form Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), ending a two-year marriage effort that involved federal scrutiny and approval, and rail stakeholder objections and support.

But the harder part is just starting: the integration of the two organizations. It likely will take a lot of sweat equity and several years to completely turn two major railroads into one new Class I.

What are all the required steps and processes needed for integration? What will be the most difficult aspects of it? Who are the integration drivers, major players in the effort and new top dogs at CPKC? And what are the merged railroad’s objectives both during and after integration?

For answers, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl solicits comments from Keith Creel — CP’s former leader who’s now CPKC’s president and CEO — and talks with integration guru Jonathan Wahba, the merged organization’s vice president of commercial integration, and other CPKC execs.
