March 2023 Editorial Lineup

Cover story: For NS, ‘resilience railroading’ relays the new marching orders

When service-disruption cycles surface, the traditional approaches employed by Norfolk Southern Railway to counteract them didn’t always pan out. Temporarily furloughing surplus employees and limiting spending created problems when demand rebounded and the workforce needed to be increased. Ultimately, the railroad couldn’t rehire furloughed employees fast enough to operate fluidly.

So, NS now is pursuing “resilience railroading,” a term it coined as part of a new operational strategy. The new mission calls for employing different approaches to constantly provide reliable and resilient service; drive continuous productivity improvements; and prompt smarter and more sustainable business growth over the long term through various initiatives and investments, including an effort to improve workforce development.

To peel back the layers of resilience railroading in terms of the whats, whys and hows, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl holds court with President and CEO Alan Shaw, EVP and Chief Transformation Officer Annie Adams and other high-ranking executives during a visit to NS’ new Atlanta headquarters.
