Cover story: UP's ambition to become an unstoppable intermodal force

Union Pacific Railroad leaders are excited about a promising intermodal business milestone set to be reached on Jan. 1, 2023. That’s the day trucking and intermodal giant Schneider installs UP as its primary western rail carrier and ends a 30-year western partnership with BNSF Railway Co. Schneider owns one of North America’s largest intermodal fleets with more than 25,000 containers and plans to double its intermodal business by 2030. The transition to UP will foster more direct transcontinental connections for customers and create “an unstoppable force in the intermodal marketplace,” Schneider officials say. To decipher all aspects of the intermodal growth strategy, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl talks to several key UP executives, including Kari Kirchhoefer, vice president of premium — who oversees the railroad’s automotive and intermodal business — and Polly Harris, VP of human resources.
