The railroad has committed to establish a science-based target to lower its carbon emissions in accordance with the Paris Agreement on climate change. NS also has stepped up other sustainability initiatives in a big way, from using cleaner energy as a power source to using more energy-efficient buildings to employing fuel-saving locomotives to supporting reforestation projects.

To gather details on those initiatives and the railroad’s overall sustainability strategy, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl picks the brains of several top NS executives, including Chie Executive Officer James Squires, Chief Transportation Officer Ann Adams and Chief Operating Officer Cindy Sanborn.
