Since May 1971, Amtrak has provided national intercity passenger rail service across the United States. Fifty years later, the railroad is pursuing plans to modernize and upgrade its fleet to include new trainsets for the Midwest and high speed rail trains for the Northeast Corridor; rebuild century-old rail tunnels and other infrastructure; and expand service by building new or improved rail corridors in over 25 states.
