Class I Interview: BNSF Railway's Matt Rose
Come April, Matt Rose's 26-year career with BNSF Railway Co. will draw to a close. He plans to retire as executive chairman. After joining BNSF in 1993 as senior vice president of the merchandise business unit, Rose held several other senior leadership roles in marketing and operations before he climbed to the position of chief operating officer. He was appointed chairman and chief executive officer in late 2000, served in those posts for 13 years, and then assumed the newly formed position of executive chairman on Jan. 1, 2014.

Rose helped guide BNSF's transition to a privately held company after Berkshire Hathaway Inc. acquired the railroad in 2009. He also navigated the organization through several economic swings while still prompting significant business growth. Along the way, Rose molded himself into a mover and shaker, not only greatly influencing the direction of BNSF, but the prospects of the rail industry, by leading efforts to avoid potentially harmful regulation.

So what does the man himself consider his greatest contributions to both BNSF and the industry? What were the seminal moments in his long career? What will he do post-retirement? Managing Editor Jeff Stagl talks with Rose to find out. Several mentors, colleagues and observers also weigh in on Rose and his accomplishments.
