Progressive Railroading's 2018 Rising Stars
In 2013, Progressive Railroading created the Rising Stars recognition program as a way to highlight — and celebrate — some of the industry's up-and-comers. For the past five years, we've asked readers to help us identify 20 individuals under the age of 40 who are making a positive difference in the rail industry. Earlier this year, readers nominated more than 200 individuals. We selected the 2018 Rising Stars from that group.
Honored at a July 22 recognition dinner in Chicago, this year's class comprises a diverse set of men and women chosen based on their contributions to the industry, career achievements, demonstrated leadership, professional association activity or community involvement. This month, we feature profiles of our 2018 Rising Stars.

Short Line Profile:
Palmetto Railways
The short line that's existed for more than 125 years in South Carolina — mostly as a state-owned entity — has gone by several names over the years, including South Carolina Canal & Railroad Co., Port Terminal Railroad and South Carolina Public Railways. Known as Palmetto Railways since 2013, the railroad manages more than 60 miles of track and interchanges with CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.
Palmetto has grown traffic since its founding and some recent efforts suggest more carloads are on the horizon. The short line aims to build a line to a new industrial park in Berkley County and develop an intermodal facility at a former naval base near Charleston. We check in with Palmetto leaders to chart the railroad's growth path and trace its rich history.

Intermodal:
Port of Long Beach Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project
The Port of Long Beach continues to move forward with its $1.3 billion Middle Harbor Redevelopment project. The effort includes combining two aging shipping terminals and shifting on-dock traffic from trucks to trains. Port officials say the project will create "the world's greenest container shipping terminal."
Are the railroads serving the port ready to take on the additional traffic? What sorts of infrastructure upgrades are involved? What are some of the challenges the port is facing as it rolls out this project? Port of Long Beach officials tell us how the project is proceeding.

Fuel Management Technology
Enhanced employee training programs, locomotive engineer incentive programs and new technologies all help railroads reduce fuel usage and rein in costs. This month, we focus on the technologies railroads have at their disposal to better manage fuel use. A cross-section of suppliers tell us what's new, as well as tried and true, on the fuel management technology front.
