Norfolk Southern — Playing a Part in the 'Innovation Revolution'
Norfolk Southern Corp. Chairman, President and CEO James Squires believes the freight-rail industry needs to help lead what he characterizes as the "innovation revolution." As he sees it, that means railroads need to harness the full potential of human talent, next-generation equipment, emerging technologies, Big Data and automation.
NS is trying to play a part in the revolution. The Class I is adopting more smart sensors, advanced analytics software and algorithms; installing additional infrared scanners and lasers; employing machine learning and predictive modeling techniques; and promoting industry-wide data-sharing processes. NS also is using virtual reality welders to improve training and piloting drones to improve track inspections.
To chronicle NS' innovation pursuits, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl talks one-on-one with Squires, and with CIO Fred Ehlers and CLO John Schieb. AVP of Advanced Train Control Tom Schnautz, Director of Car Administration Jamie Williams and two senior directors in the information technology department provide context, as well.
