Progressive Railroading April 2017
Cover Story:
MOW Spending Report 2017
Freight railroads spent less on infrastructure upkeep in 2016 than they did the previous year. What are they planning to spend this year? More? Less? About the same? What have passenger railroads and transit agencies set aside for maintenance-of-way (MOW) work for 2017?

This month, we'll share the results of our exclusive annual MOW Spending Report, which examines the budgets of more than four dozen freight and passenger railroads, and breaks down the planned work within their programs - from rail and ties to bridges and stations.

Short-Line Focus:
Real-Time Data Analytics at Conrail
Several years ago, Conrail developed in-house data warehouses to store and process fact-based asset information while limiting variability. The data repository has enabled the railroad to measure the time and motion of all static and mobile assets from both an operating and maintenance perspective.

Now, Conrail's Pavonia Yard in Camden, N.J., has been redesigned and re-engineered to employ the repository approach and reap the benefits from real-time data analytics. Managing Editor Jeff Stagl tours the high-tech switching yard and discusses data repository principles with CEO Ron Batory and other Conrail executives.
High Speed Rail:
All Aboard Florida Update
We'll provide an update on the status of Brightline, the brand name of All Aboard Florida's express train that will launch passenger-rail service between Miami and West Palm Beach sometime this year. Stations in Miami and other communities are under construction, and the first Siemens-built Brightline trainset was delivered to Florida in December for testing. Eventually, the rail service will be extended from West Palm Beach to Orlando.
IoT:
Onboard Monitoring Technology
Today's locomotives are computers on wheels. Onboard monitoring systems collect and transmit remote, data-driven, in-time operational intelligence to help railroads increase system availability, reduce on-track failures and improve efficiency. We'll feature an array of products, systems and technology that monitor locomotive health, train handling, fuel use and overall performance.
C&S:
Rail Yard Technology
Technology is playing an increasingly vital role in keeping rail yards fluid. What's new on the technology front? A cross-section of providers of rail yard control technology providers share product and system information.
