Innovation at Union Pacific Railroad
Union Pacific Railroad strives to keep pushing the continuous-improvement envelope to find more ways to drive efficiencies in how equipment functions and how operational tasks - even the simplest ones - are performed. One new initiative aims to spark new ideas on improving routine tasks or enhancing equipment, and at the same time empower employees to help drive innovation throughout the company.

Originally designed for IT employees, a crowdsourcing software application now will serve as a platform for sharing ideas railroad-wide. Set to launch in May, the software will enable workers to introduce, critique and vote on an idea. Concepts that obtain peer support will advance via a process that includes research, validation and, perhaps, implementation. UP leaders are convinced that innovating is vital to recruiting, as well. To be considered a top technology-driven employer - among the ranks of Google and Apple - the railroad needs to create an environment that embraces and nurtures the latest innovations, they believe.

Focus on Engineering/Contracting:
Two Key Rail Projects
This month, we're focusing on two big rail projects: the Virginia Avenue Tunnel project in Washington, D.C., and the multiphased Purple Line extension in Los Angeles.

In December, CSX announced the completion of the first phase of the Virginia Avenue Tunnel project, which cleared the way for the Class I to move double-stack trains between Middle Atlantic ports and the Midwest. The project is part of the $850 million National Gateway Initiative, a public-private partnership. Clark/Parsons, a joint venture comprising Clark Construction Group LLC and Parsons Corp., serves as the design/build contractor. Meanwhile, the first phase of Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Purple Line extension has reached a number of milestones during the past several months. The design-build contractor for the first-phase extension is STS, a Skanska, Traylor Brothers Inc. and J.F. Shea Construction Joint Venture. In mid-January, the agency planned to recommend a Tutor Perini Corp./ O & G joint venture to build the extension's second phase.
