Progressive Railroading 2017 February Issue Preview
Cover Story:
Washington Update: What Now for Rail?
Infrastructure investment, the 45G tax credit, truck size and weight, and the makeup of the Surface Transportation Board are among the key legislative issues that railroads and their representatives will be discussing on Capitol Hill when the 115th Congress convenes and a new presidential administration sets up shop in January. This month, Progressive Railroading will examine those and other hot political topics for rail.

Mechanical:
Annual Finance & Leasing Guide
Our 17th annual guide provides a directory of finance-related resources — including banks, lessors, finance companies and professional services providers. It also features rail-car-market commentary from Progressive Railroading Columnist Richard Kloster.
MOW/IoT:
'Big Data' Starts to Deliver Results
Converting the mountain of data collected by railway systems into useful maintenance operations information is a big task that promises big benefits. Short lines, Class I's and transit-rail agencies are all hoping that system integrators and data scientists can show them how to use field data to improve operational efficiency and safety. Applications are beginning to appear. We report on the progress and partners revealed at the University of Delaware's "Big Data in Rail Maintenance Planning Conference."
C&S:
Suppliers Speak: Communication-Based Train Control Technology
Positive train control (PTC) isn't the only signaling system technology out there, particularly for railroads that aren't required to implement it. Communications-based train control (CBTC) makes use of the telecommunications between a train and track equipment for collision prevention, traffic management, asset utilization, and passenger communications (in transit applications). We'll talk with a cross-section of CBTC suppliers to learn what's new or vastly improved in that part of the train-control spectrum.
Passenger Rail:
Focus on Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority
Winter weather service shutdowns and disruptions in February 2015 and subsequent challenges have marred the image of MBTA. Following those shutdowns, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker spearheaded several changes at the agency, including the creation of a fiscal management and control board. We'll chat with MBTA Chief Administrator Brian Shortsleeve to learn more about the agency's progress on those measures, as well as other plans for the future.
