Cover Story:
Focus on BNSF — Building Business with Intermodal
When BNSF Railway Co. opened Logistics Park Kansas City (LPKC) in September 2013, the Class I hoped the Edgerton, Kan., industrial park that's anchored by a 433-acre intermodal terminal would attract a lot of economic development — and a lot of freight traffic. A bit more than three years later, that wish is coming true.

Seven industrial buildings have been built so far at LPKC by such tenants-turned-intermodal-shippers as DeLong Grain, Flexsteel, Kubota and Smart Warehousing. The terminal that was designed to handle 500,000 containers annually will soon need to be expanded to accommodate triple that amount if development continues at the current pace. And BNSF leaders believe it will.

This article describes how LPKC has been an economic development and intermodal volume-generating success story for BNSF. We check in with BNSF's top executives in charge of economic development, as well as with the mayor of Edgerton, and several tenants and industrial building developers.
Passenger Rail:
Mobile Apps Bolster the Transit Industry
As mobile apps continue to proliferate in the passenger-rail realm, transit agencies are exploring how they can use the technology to address complex problems. For some agencies, apps help integrate ridesharing services like Uber with existing apps to solve the so-called "first- and last-mile problem." For others, apps let customers report security issues. We'll talk with the transit agencies and their app development partners to discover the latest ideas for using this fast-growing technology.
