Cover Story:
Inside Norfolk Southern's Premier Corridor
The Heartland Corridor between Virginia and Ohio and Crescent Corridor running from New Jersey to Louisiana are vital business-building and operations-supporting routes for Norfolk Southern Railway. But the Premier Corridor between Illinois and Pennsylvania is perhaps the railroad's most critical artery. The 700-mile corridor is one of the busiest and fastest links in NS' 22-state network. NS counts on the Premier Corridor to move freight to and from such population-rich consumer markets as Chicago, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The route handles more than half of all premium intermodal traffic, half of domestic intermodal volume and about one-third of general merchandise carloads. To keep the asset in tip-top shape, NS allocates tens of millions of dollars for infrastructure improvements each year. In 2015, NS spent $95.5 million to place rail, ties and ballast on the Premier Corridor, and $30.5 million to boost the line's capacity, such as by building or extending support track and sidings, and expanding facilities. How does NS plan to bolster the corridor in 2016 and beyond? What are some of the other measures the Class I is taking to build and support business on the route in both the short and long term? For answers, Managing Editor Jeff Stagl discusses all things Premier Corridor with several high-ranking NS executives.
C&S Special Section:

Passenger Rail Snapshot:
Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff
In November 2015, Sound Transit's board named Peter Rogoff the agency's new chief executive officer. A former Federal Transit Administrator, Rogoff most recently had served as the U.S. Department of Transportation's under secretary of policy. In this month's snapshot profile, we'll ask Rogoff what it's like to run Sound Transit — a regional transit agency serving the Seattle region and central Puget Sound — after serving the industry on the government side. We'll also talk with him about Sound Transit's growth plans, including a recent decision to speed up its light-rail timeline.
MOW Product Roundup:
